Summer Football Fixtures
Competitive Football is now up and running with multiple Headington teams competing against sides from other schools.
On Tuesday 18th May, 11 very excited U12 footballers travelled to the Oxford Academy to take part in a 5-a-side tournament against local Oxford schools.
These matches were some of the first fixtures for the majority of the players at the tournament since the last lockdown. The girls struggled in their opening matches against the eventual winners St Gregory the Great. The next round saw draws for both Headington teams against the Oxford Academy and mixed results against the Swan School and Cheney. Overall Headington finished 4/5th out of 8.
Mr Danny Travis, Headington’s Head Football Coach said: “The games were self-officiated by the players and this was done with complete honesty, which was to the girls’ credit. We were very proud of our teams for putting in such a huge amount of effort in their first games back.”
On Wednesday 19th May, Headington took a team to the ISFA Regional 7-a-side competition held this year at Forest School in Epping, a tournament that Headington have historically excelled in.
Headington’s first match could have been a tricky affair, however the girls started with great determination and swept aside King Alfred’s 4-0 with goals from Ruby, Bethan and Tilly. Queenswood were trickier opponents until a wonder goal from Ruby settled the match 1-0. Headington were also victorious against St Aubyns and Pipers Corner and only needed to avoid defeat against the hosts to progress through to the semi-finals. A gnarly 0-0 draw meant that Headington progressed as group winners and would face Belmont. The game had much drama but no goals and would be settled by a penalty shootout dominated by heroic goalkeeping. Hazel saved four penalties before Belmont squeezed a goal in to take them through to the final.
Mr Travis, Headington’s Head Football Coach said: “Although a disappointing exit, the team performance was outstanding and exciting times lay ahead for this group of players.”
