Prefect Hustings 2023
Girls took to the floor in front of their peers, teachers and younger pupils to make their case to be selected as one of Headington’s prefects.
The Hive Lecture Theatre was packed out on Tuesday 28th February as sixth formers were given one-minute to answer the question ‘What makes a good leader?’. It was just one stage in the prefect application process. Those wishing to be considered had to write an application letter and film a short video, on the basis of which staff and pupils then voted as to who they believed would make a good prefect. They also had to submit their Headington School Portfolio, a record of achievements during their time at Headington inside and outside school and rank the prefect roles they were applying for in order of preference. A total of 25 girls applied for one of 16 roles.
The process is designed to mirror what girls might face in later life when applying for jobs. Following the hustings, shortlisted candidates for the Head Girl Trio will be invited for interview with the Headmistress and Pastoral Director of Sixth Form, then the following week those being considered for the remaining 13 prefect roles will be invited to interview with relevant staff members.
Pastoral Director of Sixth Form Miss Hannah Leigh said: “I was bowled over by the impressive array of speeches during the hustings.
“Their different answers to the question provided a clear example of how the pupils have all developed to be their own person in their time at Headington.
“I was particularly impressed by those joining the School at the beginning of this academic year putting themselves forward for these roles, already speaking collegiately about their time at Headington. Further to this, I was immensely proud of the students I have watched come through Middle School who are now in the Sixth Form and wanting to give back to the community.”
Prefects act as important representatives of and role models for the School at events such as open mornings and assessment days, with each also having specific responsibilities according to the position. In addition to the prefect roles, which cover key areas including Chapel, Charities, Diversity and Inclusion, Eco, Social and Wellbeing along with a prefect heading each academic year, L6 girls can also apply to be a student leader. These key roles cover everything from being leaders in academic subjects, to extra-curricular pursuits, to boarding houses and competitive houses, along with those with interests in other areas of school such as Marketing, International and Alumnae.
