Year 6 play – Olivia!

This term Year 6 pupils enjoyed an intense rehearsal schedule of pulling together a play in a week under the direction of Drama teacher Mr Richard Kidd and the Year 6 staff.

The show ‘Olivia!’ was chosen by Mrs Amy Evetts as it included many parts and plentiful whole cast appearances. The story mashes multiple Victorian stories into one.

We meet Olivia who is loosely based around Oliver Twist, and who also escapes from a miserable orphanage after wanting less gruel! She soon teams up with none other than Eliza Doolittle –  but not before having a run-in with Fagin and the Artful Dodger as they rob a wallet from none other than George Bernard Shaw. Honestly, you couldn’t make this stuff up! There’s even a little guest appearance from Ebeneezer Scrooge.

The girls worked incredibly hard over long days to perfect the many songs, lines and synchronised choreography. The result was, in a word, spectacular! The expectation of a West End production didn’t fall short, from the stunning set design courtesy of Mrs Clarke and her team of helpers, to the whole Year 6 cast singing about ‘Slop’, the orphans’ breakfast. It was incredible to remember that the performers were only 10 or 11 years old. The parents were taken aback by the slick performance and moved to tears and laughter throughout. It really was a wonderful Year 6 play and performed just in time for a long rest over half term.

Well done to everyone involved, all the marvellous performers and all the incredible staff for creating such a memorable performance.
