Model United Nations conference
On the weekend of Sunday 30th September and Sunday 1st October, Headington students organised the school’s inaugural Model United Nations conference. Planned, organised and delivered by Headington students, the conference welcomed more than 80 students as both delegates and chairs of committees.
This included students from Rye St Antony’s and D’Overbroeck’s School. The conference was opened by Headington Headmistress Mrs Caroline Jordan.
The conference took in five committees:
- Environmental
- Human Rights
- Political
- Security Council
- World Health Organisation
Students debated topics – from a governmental perspective rather than their own personal view – on issues as varied as the question of Arctic Oil, the question of green GDP and the question of preventing further war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This was followed by a crisis situation in the general assembly for the last part of the conference.
Mr Cy Webber, Head of Business and Economics at Headington said: “Headington students were energetic, motivated, proactive and incredibly enthusiastic. It was incredibly rewarding to watch students debate in such an effective manner having been meticulous in their research, putting forward resolutions to real, ongoing political issues.”
“The conference came together because of the dedication and commitment of 14 students over the past six months. Without Alisa, Anisa, Judy, Hillary, Leanna, Skylar, Chapelle, Didi, Zainab, Ellie, Hattie, Emily, Anaya and Zara, this fantastic conference would never have happened. We hope to be bigger and better next year!”
