MedSoc with Dr Gbemi David-West
Headington Rye Oxford had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Gbemisola David-West to speak at MedSoc in October.
Dr David-West works as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
She spoke with passion and enthusiasm about her career in the NHS. The group learned about her early medical studies and visit to Australia where she helped in under-resourced communities.
She described how she first found her passion for her specialty while working in Australia when she realised how frequently women passed away giving birth without the appropriate medical care available.
Dr Victoria Vaccaro, Head of Biology and supervisor of the Medical, Dentistry and Veterinary programme at Headington Rye said: “Her talk was inspirational and honest – an obstetrician clearly has to be able to cope with a lot of difficult situations and plenty of bodily fluids!
“The girls were fascinated by Gbemi’s stories and we couldn’t stop them asking questions. They inquired about maternal mortality rates in the NHS, important skills as a doctor and interactions between the obstetrics wards and NICU at the hospital.”
“It was a wonderful talk and an opportunity to ask probing questions about the profession. Pupils and teachers got an honest insight into an extremely popular but demanding branch of medicine. We all left inspired, but very much in awe of the hard work and amazing doctor-patient communication skills needed in this career.”
