Pompeii Trip 2024
October half term saw the Classics Department take 35 L4 and U4 pupils to the Bay of Naples for five days.
Despite arriving in between thunderstorms, the weather proved sunny and warm much to the envy of family back home.
On Sunday the group took the hydrofoil to Capri where they walked up to the Emperor Tiberius’ villa and saw the remains of what must have been an impressive residence. Unlike in Tiberius’ day, no one was thrown from the cliff! The group also had a chance to admire the expensive exclusive shops.
On Monday, the group went to Pompeii and visited a large proportion of the site. Seeing the theatre, amphitheatre, palaestra, street of shops, rich residences including Caecilius’, as well as the Forum. Mrs Louise Workman, Head of Classics, said: “It was sobering to see the casts of the dead in situ.”
On Tuesday, everyone clambered up Mount Vesuvius to enjoy great panoramic views over the bay and got to really appreciate how devastating the eruption was before visiting Herculaneum on its slopes.
The girls also enjoyed beginners’ Italian where they improvised a scenario and played Latin bingo. Finally, the girls all enjoyed the authentic Italian pizzas and the visit to the mozzarella producer on the way to the airport.
Mrs Workman said: “It was a fantastic trip and amazing how in between the fun of visiting new places, the students were such sponges for new information!”
