Headington Sports Awards 2019
Sporting achievements at all levels were celebrated at Headington’s annual Sports Awards.
The Sports Awards were reintroduced last year, with prizes awarded to outstanding sportswomen from U3 to U6. This year’s special guest speaker was Paige Reed, an England U21 Netball player.
A huge array of different sports were recognised during the event at the School on Friday 26th May. In each year group, girls were nominated in the categories of most improved, commitment to sport and all-rounder.
There were also awards for outstanding achievements. The winner of the Junior Outstanding Achievement Award was Daisy, who trains with the England Development Football Squad as well as representing the School at U13 and U14 level. Representing Crowmarsh in the U13 Oxfordshire FA league, Daisy is the team’s top scorer. The Intermediate Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Safiyah, who recently competed at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow, finishing third in the 50m breaststroke and second in the 50m freestyle U17 finals, breaking the Junior and Open County records. The Senior Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Emma, who at age 15 has been selected for the U19 England Netball team.
A number of girls were recognised for representing their country internationally in a wide range of sports, including Netball, Fencing, Rowing, Orienteering, Karate and Equestrian.
The Junior Team of the Year was announced as the Intermediate Cross Country Team, who reached the English Schools’ Athletics Association Cross Country Cup National Finals, while the Senior Team of the Year was the U16 8s National Schools Head Team in Rowing, who took the title at the Schools’ Head of the River Race.
The biggest two prizes of the night, Junior and Senior Sportsperson of the Year, went to Darcy, who finished in the top eight of the Mount-Haes Sabre competition at the Public Schools’ Fencing Competition and was named Mount-Haes Girls’ Champion at Arms, and Sport Prefect Bethany, who has represented the England W18 team in Orienteering but also acts as a coach and mentor to younger sportswomen, supporting after-school Cross Country and Athletics practises and producing maps of the school site and local areas used in D of E expeditions and PE lessons by girls and staff.
Congratulations to all those nominated.
