IB girls celebrate excellent results
Headington School is today celebrating its ninth year of top International Baccalaureate results, with three girls achieving an impressive 44 marks out of 45.
Head of Day Katya, Bethany and Isabelle all achieved the score and secured their first choice university places. Katya, who is headed to Durham to study Music said: “I was really relieved when I got my results. It’s nice to know two years of impossible work has actually paid off – I wasn’t sure it would! I really don’t want to leave Headington, I’m going to cry a lot. It’s been an incredible experience, I couldn’t recommend it enough to anyone. I just want to do the whole thing again!”
She follows in the footsteps of last year’s Head of Day, Freya, who also scored 44 points and secured a place at Durham University. She is now in her second year studying History and Spanish.
Bethany, a gifted athlete who has represented England in Orienteering races in the UK and abroad and will now study Architecture at Bath, said: “It’s always a relief when you actually see the results. I’ve really enjoyed my time here, I’ve been here since Year 7, they’ve done a lot for me and I am really grateful.”
It was Headington’s largest ever IB cohort, with 36 girls sitting the qualifications. Director of IB Mr James Stephenson said: “It has been wonderful to see interest in and understanding of this excellent qualification grow over the last ten years at Headington. The results today are a reflection of a lot of hard work on the girls’ part over the past two years and I am delighted for each of them.”
It was a particularly special set of results for Mr Stephenson as he was celebrating with daughter Lucie, who achieved an excellent 37 points and will study Hispanic Studies with French at Warwick. She said: “Fortunately people like him, so that’s lucky. When I heard him come back from work, knowing he knew my results already, I just stayed in my room – it’s quite strange!” Lucie, whose mother Michelle teaches French at Headington, is one of three girls who, in our Year of Languages, secured their offers to study languages at their first choice of university.
Many of the girls completed their celebrations at the School’s annual Foundation Day, enjoying performances from some of Headington’s talented musicians and dancers, taking part in fun activities and socialising with their friends.
Headington School has consistently been in the top 10 IB schools in the UK since the School began offering the qualification alongside A Levels in 2009. Today nearly a third of the Headington girls taking the qualification achieved 40 points or more out of a possible total of 45. Of the 157,000 students around the world who sit the IB, only 10 per cent will achieve a result of 40 or more points. The cohort have secured places at a wide selection of universities, including a significant number at Russell Group universities. The IB Diploma is a well-established pre-university course which is offered as an alternative to traditional A Levels at Headington. To gain the Diploma, candidates must score at least 24 out of a possible 45 and this year Headington girls gained a fantastic average point score of 37.2.
Headington’s Headmistress Caroline Jordan said: “The girls have done fantastically well and these excellent results are richly deserved. We are lucky enough to be able to offer both A Level and IB at Headington and strongly believe that having teachers who are expert in both programmes enriches and enhances the learning experience for all. I would like to congratulate everybody receiving results today – well done!”
