D of E Girls go Gold

During the last week of the summer holidays, a group of five U6 girls travelled to the Brecon Beacons to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold qualifying expedition.

After an acclimatisation and route planning day with their instructor and DofE assessor, Georgie, Holly, Sabrina, Daisy and Maya set off from a campsite in Talybont-on-Usk carrying their kit and supplies for the next four days. Despite the challenging conditions, which included driving wind and rain, they walked for an average of eight hours a day, following their route cards and meeting their instructor at agreed checkpoints along the way.

On reaching their designated finish point in Libanus on the Friday afternoon, the girls met up with their instructor for feedback and successfully completed their expedition. Challenges included tackling Pen Y Fan (the highest peak in south Wales) on the first day of the expedition, navigating around the wetlands by day and setting up camp in the pouring rain by night.

To achieve the Gold level, the girls must also successfully complete all the sections (volunteering, skills and physical) and participate in a residential trip (5 days and 4 nights). They are now looking forward to finishing the award and receiving their certificates at a Gold Award Presentation at a Royal palace.

Well done to the girls for completing their qualifying expedition and good luck finishing your awards!
