Success at Chess Tournament!
Two teams of three girls from Headington Prep competed in the Oxfordshire Schools Girls’ Team Chess tournament on Thursday 10th October. This is the first year that the event has run, hopefully to become a regular fixture in the annual Oxfordshire Girls’ Chess Festival.
It was encouraging to see the girls play well to take first and third place in the tournament. Both teams won medals and the winning team will be presented with a trophy for the Shool. The first team members (Cecilia, Amanda and Jyoti) also receive invitations to play in the ‘simul’ (simultaneous exhibition) chess match, against former British Women’s Chess Champion WFM Sarah Longson, at Blenheim Palace!
The weekend events are also part of this year’s Oxfordshire Girls’ Chess Festival, with Blenheim Palace hosting the English Girls’ Chess Championships incorporating the first Oxfordshire Girls’ Chess Championships. In these tournaments, which also include the players from Headington School among the entrants, the girls will compete on an individual basis for various trophies and other prizes.
