Sixth Formers visit the Alliance Française, Oxford
A group of sixth formers studying French visited the Alliance Française, Oxford. Read a report by Zoe and Amelie, both L6, below.
Today I attended a workshop held by Alliance Française, Oxford. We had a pleasant walk in the morning and arrived at the centre to be greeted with drinks and croissants and started our workshop “La Gastronomie”. It was challenging but enjoyable to attempt to converse in French for the entire duration and the staff were very friendly and helpful. They introduced us to the different French pastries and cheeses which are culturally significant in France and I found it interesting and learned about a lot of new desserts and vocabulary.
We tasted some cheeses as well, and while I personally do not like all of them, I appreciated the variety and effort taken for them to be provided for us. We then had lunch at Pierre Victoire which was incredibly filling and delicious and went to the Ashmolean Museum to look at selective pieces. It was engaging to first find them ourselves, then receive a guided tour in French and I learned a lot about world history while practising my French listening skills. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day.

On Tuesday 15th October, myself and other A Level French students submerged ourselves into the French culture by spending the day at the Alliance Française in Oxford. Our day began with croissants and coffee, a typical breakfast eaten in France. Followed by a two hour workshop, the theme was “La Gastronomie”. We did a variety of fun activities which helped widen our vocabulary and understand more about delicacies in France.
The workshop was engaging and was conducted brilliantly by the staff at Alliance Française. After this, we had the opportunity to try common French cheeses like Brie and Roquefort. They were all delicious. After a productive morning at the Alliance, we all headed to Pierre Victoire, a French bistrot where we had lunch. Meals ranged from tartiflette to confit de canard. Once we had eaten lunch we headed to the Ashmolean Museum where we were shown around by an excellent French guide to improve our listening and comprehension skills by answering several questions about the museum in French. Our day at the Alliance Française was well structured, enjoyable and it gave us the chance to talk to other French students who do IB or are in their final year at Headington.
