STEM research at Oxford University
Headington scientists enjoyed a talk from an Oxford University Chemistry student. Read a report from Zeynep, U6, below.
Jonty Mason is a Masters student studying Chemistry at Jesus College. He is part of the Mackenzie Group and does research around catalysis using metal clusters.
On Thursday 24th November, as part of the HSO Lunchtime Lectures, he delivered a talk at Headington School on what exactly his research is, how it is conducted using high-level machinery and spectroscopic techniques, and finally how it can be applied as a solution for global warming.
It was truly fascinating to see how some of the concepts we learn during A Level, such as IR Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry, can be used in such ways to ultimately help make the world a better place.
The talk was widely enjoyed by students from years 9-13, and had an abundance of positive reviews from each respective year group afterward. Truly inspiring for a generation of young Chemists!
