On Ash Wednesday the School congregated in the Sports Hall to mark the beginning of Lent.
At the event girls also heard an address from Dr Ben Thomas, a consultant in Neurosciences Intensive Care Medicine and a speaker for the Oxford Centre of Christian Apologetics, OCCA.
Dr Thomas also spoke at Chapel Prayers to address identity, reason and faith.
These events were part of a series of talks over the past week, with Clare Thomas speaking about reason, faith and racial justice in our boarders’ service, and Tom Price speaking about critical thinking, critical viewing, worldview and faith in our lower school PSHE. The Lent talks culminated in a short presentation and Q&A on medical ethics.
We are incredibly grateful to the team from OCCA who gave up their time and expertise to speak at Headington Rye, prompting great debate and super discussion.
Chapel Prefect Ginny said: “It was wonderful to see the openness of conversation that occurred following the talks, and to hear thought-provoking, insightful, and relevant discussion by the speakers in the talks themselves.
“We particularly enjoyed the medical ethics talk from Dr Ben Thomas and how he helped us work through the process of respectfully thinking through ethical questions that are so applicable to today’s society and the opportunity to discuss questions such as the balance between faith and science at the end.”
