British Youth Championship Fencing
Five Headington fencers have won places in the finals of the British Youth Championship.
Sunday 10th March was the second of the British Youth Championship Qualifiers with five Headington girls entered, looking for places in the finals at the English Institute of Sport in May 2024.
Hattie (L4) and Margarita (U4) competed in the U14 Epee. Tilly (L6) in the U18 Epee and Miuccia (U3) and Shruti (U3) in the U14 Sabre.
The U14 Epee was full of strong contenders this year making it difficult for the Headington girls however Margarita made it into a qualification position and won herself a silver medal on the way – her first medal in a Regional event.
Tilly really impressed throughout her U18 event fencing up against some stiff competition which included a couple of Junior GB Modern Pentathletes. In the end she managed a placing of 7th, qualifying for the next stages.
Miuccia and Shruti were the surprises in the U14 sabre. Being there together and with ex- Headington girl Yayu in support really boosted their confidence. Miuccia beat the fencer who was to become the number one seed in poule rounds and Shruti ran the top seed very close indeed in her last direct elimination round. Both girls qualified and both finished with bronze medals as well!
