Brookes Science Bazaar

Headington Rye’s L6 Science Ambassadors made a real impact in the Brookes 2025 Science Bazaar.

With more than 1,000 local families attending, the ambassadors worked tirelessly to run three oversubscribed self-devised workshops covering boat building and racing, human organs and exercise and construction of model lungs in a bottle. Weeks of planning and testing paid off

In addition to the main sessions, the ambassadors worked skilfully to run morning sessions for groups of children with autism, creating the necessary conducive and relaxed environment.

Responding to the high volume of visitors in the afternoon coupled with the demands of curious and eager young learners, the HRO student team did a fantastic job of bringing their activities to life.

Reflecting on the day, the ambassadors said:

“My group was responsible for the “Lung in a Bottle” workshop where we taught children how to make a model of their lungs with plastic bottles and balloons. It was an invaluable experience where I learnt so much about effective communication and preparation whilst organising an event.

“The experience has also boosted my confidence in public speaking as I had to deliver presentations to children. Overall, I had a wonderful time interacting with children and parents and sharing my love for science with others.”

“I very much appreciated the opportunity given, to lead a workshop for the people around our community. It was a wonderful experience to have, especially because I was able to step out of my comfort zone and actively interact and share some of my science knowledge with lots of people who I’ve never seen before. It was an exhausting day, but it was surely rewarding after all the hard work.”

“It has been a truly rewarding experience to engage with children from diverse backgrounds and witness their curiosity as they explored the activities we designed for them.

“I was especially surprised by how persistent many of the younger children were. Whenever they encountered an issue with their boat designs, they would repeatedly make adjustments and keep trying until they were satisfied with how their boat travelled down the water channel.

“From this experience, I realized that it wasn’t just the children learning scientific concepts from us—we were also learning from them. By the end of the event, although I was quite tired from leading multiple activities, I felt deeply fulfilled and genuinely happy.”

“Throughout the day we engaged with children and their parents from across Oxfordshire and beyond.

“There were smiles all round and all children actively engaged in the activities with everyone really enjoying the day. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.”
