Does Science Explain Everything?
The balance between Science and faith was under the microscope at a special event on Friday 14th February.
Headington welcomed Prof John Lennox to speak to U5 and the Sixth Form. Prof Lennox is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and an Emeritus Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College, Oxford University. Prof Lennox has debated with many of the ‘new atheists’ such as Professors Atkins and Dawkins.
Prof Lennox is an internationally-renowned speaker on the interface of science, philosophy and religion and has written a series of books exploring the relationship between science and Christianity.
His talk was titled, does Science explain everything?
In an age when some dismiss experts, evidence and truth and others assert that if you can’t measure it, it doesn’t exist, Prof Lennox sought a middle ground – to elevate Science but not to denigrate reasoned faith. As a committed Christian and a scientist, Prof Lennox challenged the new atheist orthodoxy with clarity and humour.
After the talk, over 30 girls came to a Q&A run in conjunction with the student led group, Explore.
Rev Tom Howell, chaplain, said: “We are immensely grateful for his time, his vast intellect and his very genuine delight in coming to Headington for the first time – and giving the girls an opportunity to think deeply about questions of Science and Faith.”
