England Youth Championship Fencing
Over the weekend the England Youth Championships were held at Hatfield Sports Village.
Five fencers from Headington took part in the competition. In Fencing contests, the top eight receive medals.
Yayu (U3) fenced in U13 Girls Sabre on Saturday – a step up in age group for her. She finished 20th overall having been beaten in her last DE (Direct Elimination) by 13th seed.
On the Sunday Charlotte (L5) fenced in the U15 Girls’ Epee along with Megan (U4). For Megan this was her first Epee competition – as she normally fences Epee only as part of Modern Pentathlon. So for her, this was testing the water of high level competitive fencing.
Charlotte had an excellent start and ranked fifth overall after poule rounds. She fenced through to the quarter finals where she was narrowly beaten by the fourth seed. Charlotte finished with a medal in sixth place overall.
Both Hattie (U3) and Margarita (L4) were in the U13 Girls’ Epee together. Again, for Hattie this was an age group step up. Hattie went out to the 24th seed. Margarita was 12th seed going into the DE rounds but then, after a tremendous fight back to level the score, eventually lost to the bronze medallist in extra time. She finished ranked 17th on England listings.
This comes after another recent success where Headington’s Fencing Captain, Isobel (L6) recently sat and passed her British Fencing Refereeing Exams.
Isobel was at England Youth Championships this weekend as a Referee and was complimented on her quiet authority on piste.
Fencing Coach Jenny Douglas said: “She did fantastically well keeping fencers cool, calm and collected in difficult conditions as it was swelteringly hot and humid!”
