Fencing at the British Youth Championships
Three gifted fencers are on their way to the Southern Regional finals after impressing at the qualifying round of the British Youth Championships.
The competition took place 8th February in Swindon and Headington Rye Oxford was represented by Martha (Year 6), Hattie (Year 9), and Miuccia (Year 8).
Martha fenced in U12 Girls’ Foil, the first Headington Rye Prep fencer to qualify for the championships. She competed in style and managed to walk away with a bronze medal!
Hattie qualified in fifth place in U14 Girls’ Epee. She had a very strong start but met some tough opposition in the direct elimination rounds and missed out on a bronze medal by one hit.
Miuccia was fencing U14 Sabre. Due to numbers, the competitors fenced a huge “poule unique” with all the U14 Boys fencing with the same weapon.
Miuccia finished second in the girls’ event and third overall in the mixed event – beating all but one of the boys to a medal!
Mrs Jenny Douglas, Fencing Coach at Headington Rye Oxford said: “I’m happy to say all three girls qualified to compete in the finals at English Institute of Sport Sheffield in May.”
The second qualifying event will take place in March with fencers representing Headington Rye for both U16 Sabre and U16 Epee taking part.
