Girls finish 10th in the National Cross Country Finals
After qualifying with ease by winning the Regional Cross Country round, four members of the U4 and two members of the L5 departed to Newquay on Friday 10th December.
After checking into a hotel on the 9th December, the squad made their way into Newquay for supper before winding down on the beach and having an early night. The weather on race day was challenging with gusty winds and sticky slippery conditions that claimed a number of runners. The Headington team were in the first race and started strongly, most of the runners were in the top half of the race. The second lap took its toll and the field started to spread out. Evey (L5) finished strongly in fifth position with Florence (U4) in 39th and Izzy (U4) in the top 60 and the final scoring runner within the top 100.
After a few tense minutes, it was confirmed that the Headington team had finished 10th in the country, their highest position ever!
Mrs Sarah Huggins, Director of Sport at Headington School said: “It was an amazing outing for our girls and a great opportunity to complete in such a strong group of runners at national level. It was a great result considering two thirds of the team will compete again in the same age group next year! Well done to all!”
Evey, Izzy and Florence have been selected to run for Oxfordshire in the South of England U15 Championships this weekend (18th December), Megan (L4) is representing the U13 team.
