Great Fire of London
On Monday 27th January, Year 2 journeyed through the streets of 1666 London to discover what times were like before, during and after the Great Fire of London.
Mistress Matilda described the story of Thomas Farriner’s bakery fire and encouraged the children to get involved as she spun the tale. The children were immersed in their learning, as they discovered all about how the Great Fire started and the devastation it brought to the capital city.
When asking the pupils about the day, Ilyana said: “I learned that they had to use gunpowder to blow up the houses to stop the fire.”
Angelina remembered that: “flames spread very quickly because of the strong winds that were blowing.”
Orlando was captured by the fact that: “The houses were so close together you could shake hands with your neighbour”.
They children were enraptured by it all.
