Green fingers for sixth formers
Sixth formers are putting their green-fingers to the test with a new elective focusing on horticulture.
A small group of L6 students are working with Mrs Aimee Jamison for their Horticulture Elective, studying the basics of gardening, soil structure, plant identification, seed germination and propagation.
So far, the budding gardeners have propagated aloe vera and jade plants, sown flowers and vegetables ready for the spring, made planters from recycled materials and designed their ‘dream’ garden.
Some of their seeds have already germinated – to great excitement! – just a week after planting and it is hoped to work alongside the school gardeners to plant out some of the produce in the grounds once the frosts are over.
Mrs Jamison’s office windowsill has become a temporary greenhouse while students are trialling growing seedlings on their own windowsills at home. Watch this space for more green-fingered news!
