Karateka Medals in International Karate Competition
An U6 karateka is celebrating after medalling in an international karate competition.
In January, Ayako was selected to compete in the European Karate Championships which took place on 1st April in Sursee, Switzerland. Ayako competed in the individual kata and team kata, in the women’s 16-20 category.
In individual kata, Ayako did well reaching the quarter-finals. However, she then she came up against a strong Hungarian competitor who ended up winning the gold medal, and narrowly lost in that round.
In the team kata, Ayako and her two team mates made it to the final and won the bronze medal.
This will be the last karate competition for Ayako during her time at Headington and so the School wishes her luck as she progresses both as a student but also as a fierce competitor in karate.
Mrs Alice Barrett, Academic Director of Sixth Form, said: “This year, Ayako has managed a fantastic set of karate achievements especially in the midst of her exam preparations! Well done Ayako. We’ll look forward to following her future results as she moves on beyond her years at Headington School.”
