Lessons in Judaism
On Friday 24th January, with Holocaust Memorial Day just a few days away, the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department welcomed two visitors from the Jewish community in Oxford.
Firstly, Miriam spoke to the whole of U4 about some of her family’s experiences before and during the Holocaust.
This which was a poignant reminder of the diversity of Jewish life and experience and particularly shone a light on the experience of Jewish refugees and their journeys and challenges when leaving everything behind and starting a new life far from home.
The second visitor, Alexander gave a brilliantly engaging session to Headington Rye’s Year 7, who are currently exploring Jewish beliefs and practices in P&RS lessons.
He brought with him various artefacts to bring the Jewish faith to life to our students and the pupils were keen to be involved and asked excellent questions to extend their knowledge.
Finally, Alexander and Miriam spent a lesson with the Year 11 GCSE group who are following the AQA Catholic Christianity course, for which Judaism is a second religion of study.
Naomi McKee, Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies, said: “We were hugely grateful and feel privileged to have benefited from these two visitors.
“This time, where the visitors shared so generously from their wealth of knowledge and lived experience, was of inestimable benefit to our students and so memorable!”
