Magical Winter Concert
The School Hall was packed out for Headington’s first whole-school concert in two years.
It was a truly memorable Winter Concert with parents, pupils and staff filling the hall on Thursday 25th November to support musicians who had worked hard throughout the term to produce an exciting and seasonal programme. The enormous Christmas tree, which arrived the day before, also helped to set a festive mood!
The first half began with a three-part arrangement of ‘White Winter Hymnal’ from the Chamber Choir, band and percussionists, leading straight onto Stringendo with a medley of tunes from the musical ‘Les Miserables’ and a dreamy ‘I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas’. The audience was then treated to a fantastic ‘Elégie for viola and piano’ by Gluck performed by U5 duo, Natalie and Claudia, followed by the newly-formed saxophone quintet with luscious arrangements of ‘Softly’ by Bob Mintzer, and the Christmas classic ‘Let it Snow’. The Sinfonietta orchestra closed the first half with a charming rendition of the soundtrack to the animated film ‘Brave’, and a full audience sing along to ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.
The Headingtones choir started the second half with a toe-tapping medley of Beatles songs, followed by two lively numbers from the Percussion Ensemble: ‘Brazilian Dreams’ and ‘Adelieland’. The String Orchestra showed off their fast bowing with a lively ‘Divertimento’ by Mozart, before the Big Band slowed everything down with a bluesy ‘Lil Darlin‘ by Count Basie, followed by an up-tempo ‘Watermelon Man’. To finish, the Symphony Orchestra impressed us with a wall of sound and rhythm with the ‘Danzon No.9’ by Marquez, showcasing some fun choreography as each section stood and sat in time with the changes.
Mrs Aimee Jamison, Director of Performing Arts, said: “Thank you to all pupils and staff who directed, organised and catered during the evening – it was a very special event, and we’re already looking forward to the next one!”
