Our new Head Girl trio and prefects
Following a demanding selection process, Headington has welcomed its new Head Girl trio and prefects.
Those who applied had to argue their case first in a written application, then in a hustings event in front of their peers before being interviewed by a member of staff. Staff and sixth formers also voted for the candidate they felt would make a good prefect.
We are delighted to announce that our prefect team will be led by Sophia Brehm, Head Girl, Tinu Baker, Head of Day, and Anna McVeigh, head of boarding. They will be supported by Filelu, Roxy, Abigail, Megan, Honor and Alice, who will take the lead on diversity, eco, wellbeing, charities, chapel and social respectively.
Sophia joined the School in Year 2. She said: “I was just overjoyed, it was so exciting. It means so much. Part of the application process made me realise how much I have loved the School and how much I have loved being here.
“I think the time will go very fast and I really want to get to know as many people as possible. Really I want to listen to people and make sure as much as they can they have as great an experience here as I have had, feel their time is valuable and they are growing and they have found their place in the community.”
Anna joined the School in U4. She said: “I found that the process was robust and transparent from the start and overall I believe it helped all students applying for prefect roles with building their confidence while feeling supported by the Headington community.
“I was honoured to be given this prestigious role within the Headington community and I am excited to contribute and give back in any way I can. I would love to use this position to strengthen relationships within the boarding community.”
Tinu said: “I was thrilled to receive the news of being the newly selected Head of Day!
“I’ve learnt a lot and intend to transfer my learnings to a wider aspect beyond school life. I aim to be a substantial ambassador and role model of the school’s ethos – high expectations have been set by the former head of daybut I look forward to working with the team to ensure these high standards are met.
“Finally, a huge congratulations to our new prefect community – I feel privileged to have experienced the process with them and look forward to an exciting Headington community journey with all.”
The outgoing prefects handed over to their new counterparts on Monday 4th April in a special ceremony which included handing over a book containing hints, tips and reflections on their experience of the role. There was also an opportunity to thank the outgoing prefects, led by Head Girl Bea Rich, Head of Day Rabiah Abbasi and Head of Boarding Timi Akoni.
Headmistress Mrs Caroline Jordan said: “With changes to our prefect structure, the process was more competitive than ever. The girls rose to the challenge and we were hugely impressed with the calibre of applicants, their thoughtful consideration of what it means to be a Headington prefect and their evident love and support of their school.
“Bea, Rabiah and Timi have been fantastic role models and I am confident that Sophia, Tinu and Anna will step up to the challenge and inspire, enthuse and lead girls throughout the School.”
