Sports Awards 2024
The 2024 Headington Sports Awards evening saw the Main Hall filled with glitzy black tie attire, wonderful lighting, live streaming equipment and plenty of smiling faces as the sports community came together to celebrate the achievements of Headington girls and teams over the last year.
There were a number of notable performances and accomplishments throughout the year in boats, on courts, on track, on astroturfs, in the gym and more. At key intervals during the event, the audience heard a number of speeches detailing the highlights of the key sports, individuals and teams. Girls were recognised for their commitment to sport, improvement, all-round achievements and outstanding sporting accomplishments.
The School was honoured to welcome GB and England Hockey star Darcy Bourne who joined as the guest speaker. Before the awards began, the athletes had plenty of time to ask her questions during the drinks reception.
Darcy passed on plenty of wisdom to the Headington stars and stars of the future through these discussions but also through her moving speech to the parents describing her journey to the top of her sporting career.
She addressed areas such as overseas universities, recovering from injury and making tough decisions to progress one’s career. Darcy also leads as an inspirational figure through her positive representation of civil rights and the rights of women both within and outside of sports.
Mr Alex Williams, Acting Director of Sport at Headington School said: “The Sports Awards are a huge highlight in our PE calendar, and as staff we love this opportunity to come together and show off the many brilliant achievements of our pupils and our teams.
“Each year the list of achievements seem to get longer and more impressive. Even though we come across the pupils each day, this evening was a real ‘wow’ moment when we were reading out the outstanding achievements and international representation and looking at all the successes of our individuals and teams in county, regional and national competitions.
“It was amazing having around 250 parents, pupils, and staff to celebrate sport – and hundreds more watching live online – our only challenge next year is how we accommodate an ever-growing list of nominees, and families, pupils, and staff who want to attend. It is a hot ticket!
“Well done to all the nominees and winners, and thank you to the PE Department for their efforts through the year and in bringing together this superb evening.”
