STEM discoveries at Prep
A mystery invite went out to the Prep School STEM Club inviting them to the first meeting of The Curiosity Book Club at the start of this term.
Pupils were intrigued by a special game of pass the parcel with a difference – at the end of the game, each pupil unwrapped a beautiful, new STEM-related book, ready to dive into in the comfort of the school library!
This year, the Prep School was selected as one of the judging schools for the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize – an initiative to inspire children to read about Science, and support the writing of high quality and engaging books for young people.
Headington Rye Prep’s STEM Club pupils set about reading and reviewing some of the shortlisted titles, as well as comparing them to some of the previous winners. Of course, being a STEM club, the children didn’t just read, and the pupils were soon back in the Science lab, taking part in practical activities that related to their favourite title, ‘Can You Get Rainbows in Space?’ by Dr Sheila Kanani MBE. This included activities such as attempting chromatography with pens and different coloured sweets.
So impressed was Erin by this title, she truly committed to the judging process by sending her photograph to Mrs Yap for the Extreme Reading competition for World Book Day and her Science Selfie challenge.
The Prep pupils clearly weren’t alone in their enjoyment of the book, as ‘Can You Get Rainbows in Space?’ was revealed as the winner of this year’s prize during British Science Week.
