Terminator Robots and Greenhouse Gas
Terminator Robots and Greenhouse Gas was the title of a fascinating talk by the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Revd Steven Croft, in Headington VI on Tuesday 7th December.
Politics students heard about the bishop’s role as one of the 26 Lords Spiritual in the House of Lords, where he sits on select committees focussing on the climate crisis and the advancement of artificial intelligence.
Bishop Steven explained the scrutinising role of the Lords and highlighted the challenges of trying to enforce and legislate around internet safety, particularly in the face of the huge power of Big Tech, and his thoughts on the recent COP 26 summit in Glasgow.
He responded thoughtfully to student questions on the possibility of extending the Lords Spiritual to other faith groups, whether the Lords should become an elected chamber, and how his work had tested his own personal faith.
The Politics Department thanks Bishop Steven for taking the time to come and talk to the School on these important topics.
